Cambridge has been ranked as the top city for new graduates starting careers, according to a report from Edumentors.

The study looked at wages, rents and job opportunities in more than 40 UK cities.

Data showed that Cambridge offered the most entry-level job openings in the country, with three graduate positions advertised for every 10 residents.

The average weekly wage in Cambridge is £924.50 and rent is £786 a month.

Data also showed that Aberdeen has the lowest rent among the cities, at £508 a month, while Belfast has the lowest unemployment rate at 1.5%.

The report found that 60% of graduates enter high-skill employment each year.

Reading ranked second on the list, with weekly wages at £917 and job growth at 23.5%.

Milton Keynes placed third, with rents below £700 and weekly wages at £794.

Edinburgh stood out for its low unemployment rate at 2.5% and strong wages, while Aldershot ranked fifth with rent at £684 and weekly wages at £834.

A higher education expert from Edumentors said: “Choosing where to start your career has always mattered, but right now the stakes are higher than they’ve been in years.

“UK graduate vacancies at top employers hit their lowest since 2012, and UK employers now receive around 140 applications per vacancy.

“This is more than triple the rate from two decades ago. In that environment, a city like Cambridge, offering three entry-level positions per ten residents, is a genuinely different proposition from somewhere where ten people are competing for every opening.

“The city you choose is effectively your first career decision.”
