Derby City Council relaunches SEND scheme to boost job opportunities for young adults

Derby City Council has relaunched the ‘SEND Journey to Work’ scheme, following the success of its first scheme. 

This programme is designed for young adults aged 18 to 25 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). 

It will give them a chance to gain supported work experience at the University of Derby.

The original ‘Journey to Work’ scheme provided young people in Derby with real-world placements, mentoring and support. 

The SEND version will follow a similar model, bringing in educators, employment specialists and employers from the university. 

It aims to help learners build skills and move towards paid roles either at the University of Derby or with partner organisations.

The eight-week programme is structured with on-site mentoring and daily reflection sessions. 

Fridays are set aside for one-to-one career coaching with a supported employment officer, covering curriculum vitae (CV) writing, job searching and interview techniques.

Paul Hezelgrave, cabinet member for children, young people and skills at Derby City Council, said: “The success of our first Journey to Work programme has been nothing short of inspirational. 

“We’ve seen young people grow in confidence, gain real skills, and secure meaningful employment.

“Building on that momentum, the launch of a dedicated programme for SEND learners is the next natural, and essential, step.”

Hezelgrave added: “Every young person deserves the chance to succeed, and this new offer ensures those with additional needs are fully supported to achieve their potential.”

Gavin Poyser, business liaison for the Journey to Work programme, said: “We are looking forward to hosting the SEND Journey to Work programme at the University of Derby. 

“We know it will be a truly rewarding experience, giving young people the chance to build confidence, develop skills, and thrive in real workplace environments. 

“By offering meaningful placements and tailored support, we are proud to help young people take the next step into education, training, or employment, directly supporting the Government’s Youth Guarantee.”

The first intake starts on 8th September 2025 and a second group is planned for January 2026.
