TV Access Project and ScreenSkills launch employment hub for disabled talent

The TV Access Project (TAP) and ScreenSkills have launched a free online employment resources hub to help deaf, disabled and neurodivergent talent work in the screen industries. 

The hub was built after focus groups highlighted that disabled freelancers lacked clear information about their legal rights and how to access support.

An online event will be held on 12th June to launch the hub, including a keynote speech from screenwriter and producer Jack Thorne.

The hub is split into six sections covering recruitment, on the job support, employment rights, career development, resources, and frequently asked questions (FAQs). 

It also includes an ‘Access Passport’ developed by the TV Access Project, designed to help freelancers by allowing them to transfer information about their adjustment needs between jobs, cutting down on repeated disclosures.

Nichola Garde, creative diversity lead at the BBC and part of the TAPs core leadership group, said: “During our focus groups it became clear that deaf, disabled and/or neurodivergent freelancers often felt unsure about their rights and how to advocate for the adjustments they need – and that this lack of clarity could limit opportunities. 

“This new resource hub is designed to change that. Working in collaboration we have built this resource hub to provide a central, accessible space where disabled freelancers can find information, guidance and support at every stage of their career.”
