Gateshead Council has signed the UNISON Violence at Work Charter, confirming its commitment to a safer working environment for all staff.
The charter sets out 10 standards employers should meet, covering things like prevention, reporting and support for workers.
Gateshead Council met the standards already and said it will keep improving its approach as needed.
This followed a request from UNISON and covers all council workers.
Councillor Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Council, said: “Violence at work is unacceptable.
“By signing this Charter, we’re making a clear and public commitment to protect our staff and ensure they feel safe and supported in their roles.”
Clare Williams, northern regional secretary at UNISON, said: “No one should face violence or abuse while simply doing their job.
“By signing this Charter, Gateshead Council is sending a clear message to staff that their safety matters.”
John Watson, assistant branch secretary at UNISON Gateshead Local Government, said: “We welcome Gateshead Council’s decision to adopt UNISON’s Violence at Work Charter.
“We work closely with senior leaders on staff wellbeing and today marks a significant step toward safer working environments for colleagues.
“We look forward to continuing our partnership working with Gateshead Council to ensure every member of staff feels protected, respected, and safe at work through the full implementation of the Charter’s standards.”
