Office workers value in-person collaboration but want flexibility in how and when they come into the office, according to new research from LinkedIn.
The research found that while employees acknowledged the benefits of face-to-face interactions, such as stronger relationship-building and faster decision-making, half of those surveyed did not want employers to enforce office attendance beyond current hybrid arrangements.
However, 72% agreed that it is reasonable for employers to expect in-person collaboration when it provides clear value.
The research highlighted that employees see specific advantages in meeting in person, particularly when dealing with complex or sensitive issues, establishing trust, and reading non-verbal cues.
Nearly three-quarters of respondents said they feel more confident signing off business deals in person, and 59% said they would spend more with suppliers they have met face-to-face.
Despite this, flexibility remains a priority.
Many employees believe remote meetings work well for routine catch-ups and weekly status calls, but key moments still require physical presence.
With 39% of C-suite leaders planning to redesign hybrid policies in 2025, businesses are working to strike a balance between autonomy and collaboration.
While leadership teams aim to enhance engagement and productivity, some are concerned that stricter office mandates could drive top talent toward more flexible employers.
To address this, 41% of C-suite leaders plan to introduce more flexible in-office hours, recognising that meaningful in-person interactions can lead to faster decision-making, greater creativity, and stronger team relationships.
Janine Chamberlin, head of LinkedIn UK, said: The future of work isn’t about forcing people back into the office; it’s about making sure that when they do come in, it’s worth it.
“The companies that get this right—those that create spaces for meaningful collaboration, idea-sharing, and relationship-building—will be the ones that keep their best talent engaged.
“That starts with listening to employees and making in-person moments truly valuable.”
