Research from Bupa Dental Care found dental professionals want more supportive and flexible workplaces, with a focus on training and a culture that looks after wellbeing.

Work-life balance was the top priority for 35%, with 31% choosing training and development, and 29% looking for a supportive, collaborative culture.

One in three (33%) said there were not enough opportunities for progression or mentoring.

A quarter (25%) said they want to make a meaningful impact in the industry, and 24% want to feel valued and proud of where they work.

Additionally, dental professionals said access to mental health services (40%), peer mentoring (38%) and support for physical pain (38%) would improve their well-being at work.

More than a third (37%) said a more flexible work environment would make a difference, especially during key life events such as menopause or caring responsibilities.

The findings followed the launch of its ‘Feel at Ease’ campaign.

The campaign is intended to help patients feel comfortable and ensure staff feel confident and supported in their careers.

Mark Allan, general manager for Bupa Dental Care, said: “The dentist’s chair is at the heart of every surgery, and we want our people to feel as supported as the patients they care for every day.

“That’s why our Feel at Ease campaign prioritises both sides of the chair – making it a place of comfort for patients, while instilling confidence and support for our teams, helping them thrive in their careers, and in turn, deliver the best possible care.

“Our findings highlight the importance of supporting well-being in the workplace as well as encouraging professional growth through rewarding career paths.”

Allan added: “This is something we’re proud to offer at Bupa Dental Care, recognising that looking after our practice team’s health and well-being and future goals helps them be the best version of themselves.”
