The Government Legal Department (GLD) has welcomed 39 trainee lawyers and eight university placement students, creating career opportunities across its offices in Bristol, Leeds, London and Salford.
The new trainees begin a two-year scheme this month, gaining experience across areas such as healthcare, defence, transport and education.
From the outset, they will be managing cases and advising ministers, with permanent employment as government lawyers available on completion of the programme.
All current second-year trainees due to finish this week have already been offered qualified lawyer roles within GLD.
For students, the National Law Placement Scheme offers 10-month paid paralegal placements.
Designed to improve access to the legal profession for people from lower socio-economic backgrounds, it gives participants practical workplace experience while opening up career pathways into government law.
John Revell, one of the new trainees, said the scheme offered “the perfect next step” in his legal career, combining development with meaningful work in public service.
Attorney General Lord Hermer KC, said: “Congratulations to all the aspiring lawyers who have joined the Government Legal Department’s trainee scheme.
“Working for the government is a huge honour and a fantastic opportunity to start your legal career.
“Trainees will develop their skills with exposure to sensitive and complex legal issues, playing a vital role in ensuring Ministers govern within the rule of law.”
