In her Budget statement, the Chancellor set out a series of work-focused reforms aimed at tightening labour market enforcement and tackling illegal working.

She said: “We will consult on indefinite leave to remain and access tax payer funded benefits. The introduction of the digital ID will break the link between illegal migration and illegal working.

“HMRC and The Fair Work Agency will crack down on illicit businesses that blight our high streets and undercut legitimate firms, enforcing the minimum wage investing dodgy businesses and increasing scrutiny of the gig economy.”

The measures are presented as part of a wider push to strengthen compliance, curb exploitation and ensure businesses operate on a level playing field.
