Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), working with local councils and employment and skills providers, has launched the ‘In Work Progression’ service, offering free one-to-one support for people in low-paid or insecure jobs across Greater Manchester.

The service is available to anyone over 18 living or working in the city region and will run until January 2027.

It aims to help people move into better jobs, boost their skills and confidence, and break down barriers to getting ahead at work.

The programme is open to people on low pay, those working while claiming benefits, or in zero-hours contracts.

Support includes advice on local job opportunities, coaching, curriculum vitae (CV) help, and finding skills or training courses.

The service is delivered in all 10 boroughs, through councils and local employment and skills providers.

The initiative is part of Greater Manchester’s live well approach, aiming to reduce inequalities and help residents move out of in-work poverty.

It builds on the Working Well programme, which has already helped thousands in the region stay in or move into work.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham, said: “In Greater Manchester we believe everyone should get the support they need to thrive.

“But too many people are stuck in jobs that don’t pay the bills and don’t reflect their potential. In Work Progression is about changing that.

“It’s about backing our residents with the support they need to move forward – whether that’s growing skills and experience, gaining greater job security, or work that’s better paid.”

Burnham added: “It also shows what our Live Well approach is all about: practical, joined-up support, embedded in neighbourhoods, that gets to the root causes of the challenges communities face.”
