The Drinks Trust has reopened the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) bursary through its DEVELOP scheme, aiming to support people working or hoping to work in the drinks sector.

Now in its third year, the DEVELOP programme offers fully funded training and educational courses.

The partnership with the WSET means more bursaries are available, helping candidates gain recognised qualifications in wine, spirits, sake, and the new beer course.

The move comes as the UK drinks and hospitality sector continues to face recruitment and retention challenges.

In the 2024-25 academic year, 173 students received a Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) bursary to help pay for their education.

Research found that 21% of drinks and hospitality businesses said their staff lacked essential skills, which is 6% higher than the average for all other UK industries.

Nicky Burston, CEO at The Drinks Trust, said: “Our mission is to create a thriving drinks industry.

“By reopening the WSET Bursary, we are helping to level the playing field and ensure that opportunities for learning, growth and success are accessible to all, regardless of background or financial circumstance.

“In an industry that relies on talent, knowledge, and passion, education must be open to everyone.”
