Employers have been urged to renew their efforts to tackle the disability employment gap, after new analysis from Dentons highlighted the continuing disparity between disabled and non-disabled workers.

According to the firm, disabled people make up around a quarter of the working-age population, yet remain significantly less likely to be in employment.

This gap has persisted despite government initiatives and sector-wide efforts to improve workplace inclusion.

Parliament has now launched an inquiry into the issue, with the House of Commons Work and Pensions Committee calling for evidence from employers, disabled individuals and organisations.

The inquiry is expected to examine barriers to employment, regional variations, and what forms of support are most effective.

Submissions will remain open until 29th September 2025.

The Government is also piloting its £2.2bn WorkWell programme across 15 regions.

The scheme connects individuals who have been issued fit notes with local employment and health services, with the aim of reducing pressure on GPs and supporting disabled people into sustained work.

Dentons points to further structural challenges, including inaccessible workplaces, lack of flexible working arrangements, and insufficient training for managers in implementing adjustments.

These, it warns, can prevent disabled employees from entering or staying in the workforce.

With the parliamentary inquiry underway and new initiatives being trialled, employers are expected to face increased scrutiny on their recruitment practices, workplace accessibility, and long-term strategies to close the employment gap.
