A supported internships programme helping young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) get workplace experience is set to start in Telford and Wrekin in September.
The Government-backed scheme is aimed at people aged 16 to 24 with SEND and is designed to help build confidence and skills through placements with local employers, with the aim of moving them closer to paid employment.
Applicants must have received support at school for a special educational need or disability.
The internships last from six to 12 months.
Participants spend part of the week in training at college, working on employability, maths and English, and the rest with an employer in a job that matches their career goals.
The programme is open to both young people and local businesses, offering practical work experience and supporting recruitment.
Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for children, young people, education, employment & skills, said: “Supported Internships can transform the lives of young people – giving them valuable skills which set them up for paid employment and a future career.
“These programmes are invaluable for young people who want to gain valuable workplace experience and take their first steps on the employment ladder.
“We’d encourage anyone who thinks they may be eligible for the programme to come and have a chat with us to find out more about Supported Internships and the local opportunities with employers which are available.”
