Mitie has secured a contract worth £136m a year to provide security for the Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) estate across England, Scotland and Wales.
The deal will see Mitie’s security staff working at jobcentres, ensuring safety for employees and visitors.
An extra contract for a new 24/7 security control centre is valued at £3m a year.
The guarding contract will last for seven years and the control centre for five years, with options to extend both to 10 years.
The work will employ around 3,000 security officers.
The new security control centre will be based at Mitie’s intelligence security operations centre in Northampton, linking with an access control centre in Gloucester run by GBE Converge, a fire and security provider.
This will allow fast response to fires, intruders, panic alarms and other incidents.
Jason Towse, managing director, business services at Mitie, said: “With a presence in nearly every town and city across the UK, the DWP delivers services that impact almost everyone at some point in their lives.
“Mitie’s security teams will play a vital role in supporting the DWP’s core mission of helping individuals access the employment support they need, while ensuring communities are safe and welcoming.”
“Working with the DWP, we will bring a step change by deploying trained security professionals, supported by robust, intelligence-led services designed to deter and detect potential threats.”
Towse added: “We’re proud to enable such a forward-facing approach.”
