Ramadan headscarf staff at Lappet Manufacturing have voted to strike over claims regarding poor pay and “punishing targets.”

Dozens of workers at Lappet Manufacturing, in Carlisle, will walk out on 30th and 31st October, and on various dates between 2nd and 17th November.

Trade union GMB said that the workers – who specialise in weaving high end headscarves for the Saudi Arabian market – need years of experience to meet required standards.

Michael Hall, regional organiser at GMB, said: “Weaving these headscarves is incredibly skilful, but these workers are paid very poorly.

“During peak times they are given punishing targets and work their fingers to the bone for no reward.

“The company can afford to do better – but these workers have been left with no choice but to walk out.”

Workplace Journal reached out to Lappet Manufacturing for comment.
