Gloucestershire County Council has launched Connect to Work, a programme funded by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) that aims to support people back into employment.

Connect to Work is set to help more than 2,900 people over the next four and a half years, focusing on those with health conditions or other barriers to getting or staying in work.

Gloucestershire is one of the first areas in England and Wales to roll out the scheme, which aims to boost employment and economic activity.

Research found that around 17.5% of people aged 16 to 64 in Gloucestershire were economically inactive, including students and early retirees, while unemployment stood at 2.6%.

Councillor Linda Cohen, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “The Connect to Work programme represents a pivotal moment for Gloucestershire.

“By supporting those who face barriers to getting into or getting back to work we are fostering a more inclusive and supportive community.

“This helps us to fulfil our commitment to ensuring that every resident has an opportunity to thrive and find meaningful employment.”
