Job applications climbed in January as workers aimed for a fresh start, with research from CV-Library showing a 10% rise in applications on Blue Monday.
Applications in January were up 72% compared to December, rising 61% from December 2023 to January 2024.
Hannah Cornish, recruitment expert at CV-Library, said: “January is typically a peak time for hiring, and the job market is already tough for job seekers with many roles attracting hundreds of applications.
“So, standing out is critical. But cutting through in 2026 isn’t about sending more applications – it’s about sending smarter, more targeted ones with a focus on how their skills deliver results.”
Cornish has given five ways candidates can stand out in a competitive market.
She said CVs need to show outcomes, not just responsibilities.
She stated that applicants should use facts, figures and clear examples to show what changed because of their work.
Cornish also said it is important to be selective, not reactive, as some sectors are hiring while others are slowing.
