The GMB union has called on the Government to ensure UK-made pottery is used in British embassies worldwide as part of efforts to support the country’s ceramics industry and safeguard jobs.
In a letter to Foreign Secretary David Lammy, GMB general secretary Gary Smith said the move would demonstrate tangible backing for workers in the sector, which has been hit hard by rising energy costs.
The union argued that the Government’s Industrial Strategy has failed to address the high price of gas needed to fire kilns, leaving manufacturers struggling to stay competitive.
The ceramics sector employs thousands of workers across the UK, particularly in traditional manufacturing hubs such as Stoke-on-Trent.
The GMB has warned that without targeted government action, jobs could be lost and long-established firms put at risk.
Smith said: “UK ceramics are the envy of the world, but political failure has left our pottery firms battling against eye-watering costs to keep their kilns lit.
“With a network of more than 300 embassies and High Commissions, the UK has a golden opportunity to showcase the best of UK pottery at embassies across the world.
“It’s a use it or lose it moment for British Pottery; we’re calling for David Lammy and the rest of the Government to play their part in defending a vital British Industry.”
