Connected vehicle solutions firm Geotab has partnered with wellness business Vitality, embarking on a driver behaviour monitoring research venture.
The programme will see drivers rewarded for safe driving, instead of the traditional methods of penalising drivers when they show poor habits.
Drivers will earn points for safe driving, working to achieve a series of tailored weekly goals.
Points are calculated by combining data from Geotab’s collision-predicting telematics systems, powered by artificial intelligence (AI), with Vitality’s behavioural science data and global driver status system.
The points system is reflective of a driver’s risk rating, relative to similar drivers.
Drivers can redeem points for gift cards or coffee, through an in-app rewards section.
It is hoped that this project will reduce the risk of collision, while helping drivers build skill at their own pace.
Edward Kulperger, senior vice president at EMEA Geotab, said: “This joint venture unites two purpose-driven leaders in their field to uniquely address the human side of fleet management.
“In today’s landscape, drivers face mounting pressures, from traffic congestion and encountering poor driving habits to demanding schedules.
“Ensuring their safety and enhancing their work day experience necessitates a blend of empathy and innovation.
“We see clear evidence of drivers’ openness to technological advancements, with 67% of British van and lorry drivers expressing support for new technology that helps improve overall driving performance.”
Launched earlier this year in North America, the beta driver monitoring programme is now available in the UK.
Participating fleets will have access to an all-in-one behaviour change platform, using resources from Vitality to implement ‘nudge-based’ driver improvement coaching.
Vitality has already helped fleets lower claims by 55%, relative to national averages, through its Vitality Drive insurance programme.
Francois Theron, deputy CEO of Vitality Drive International, said: “Our joint venture with Geotab embodies shared value, creating safer roads for clients, lowering costs for businesses and fleets, rewarding drivers who drive well and creating safer roads across Europe for all.
“Together, we are offering a unique and innovative solution, using technology to tackle a key challenge – improving driver behaviour to make our roads safer.”
