A new Government-backed apprenticeship scheme is set to open for applications this summer, providing a route into the Civil Service for young people seeking alternatives to traditional university education.
The two-year Career Launch Apprenticeship, based in Birmingham, Manchester, and London, was designed to attract a broader range of talent by lowering academic entry requirements and offering structured, on-the-job training.
Applicants need only two GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above to be eligible, and the programme is open to anyone aged 16 or older.
The apprenticeship combines practical work experience in a government setting with time set aside for professional development, ultimately leading to a recognised qualification in business administration.
The initiative forms part of the Government’s wider strategy to improve access to quality employment opportunities and address skills shortages.
By targeting those who may not have followed conventional academic routes, officials hope to make the Civil Service more reflective of the broader population it serves.
Rachel Peck, head of entry and progression at the Cabinet Office, said: “This programme brings fresh perspectives into government while giving apprentices valuable qualifications and experience.
“By offering skills-based routes into government, we ensure we don’t miss out on talented individuals who haven’t followed traditional academic paths.”
