Morrisons to cut over 200 jobs in retail people team amid cost-cutting drive

Morrisons is restructuring its retail people team, placing over 200 roles at risk of redundancy as part of its cost-cutting measures.

Morrisons is set to cut over 200 jobs within its retail people team, joining other UK supermarkets in implementing cost-saving measures. According to The Grocer, the proposed restructure would see the removal of regional people manager, store people manager, and case specialist roles, putting colleagues in these positions at risk of redundancy.

A spokesperson for Morrisons said: “We have recently carried out a review of our People structure to ensure we are offering our stores and sites a timely and consistent service.

“The new structure will consist of a number of new central roles to support our supermarkets directly along with central HR support and additional employee relations roles. Before any final decisions are taken, we will undertake a minimum 45-day consultation process.”

The move comes as businesses across the retail sector face increasing financial pressures. In December, Morrisons chief executive Rami Baitieh called on the Government to delay the “avalanche of costs” expected to impact companies following the October Budget.

Morrisons is not alone in its cost-cutting efforts. Sainsbury’s recently announced plans to close 61 in-store cafés as well as its remaining patisserie, hot food, and pizza counters.
