GMB Union has called for transparency regarding the pay algorithms at food delivery and car ride companies.

The union, which has deals with delivery giants Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Uber, said clarity is required for sensible negotiations over pay and conditions.

Eamon O’Hearn, national officer at GMB, said: “Algorithmic transparency is a massive issue across the entire platform economy.

“How much members are paid is a crucial building block of negotiation between workers and bosses.

“GMB needs to know how and when members are paid if we’re going to be effective in raising their earnings and addressing inequality.

“Our members want greater transparency in how their earnings are calculated, particularly in terms of ‘dynamic pricing’, as our members seek to keep pace with the rise in cost of living.”

A spokesperson at Uber said: “Uber believes in providing meaningful transparency to all our users.

“For us, that means sharing information about how our platform works, including how drivers, couriers and customers are matched, how prices are set and how to ensure users maintain access to the platform.

“We will continue to actively engage with couriers and GMB to better understand how we can improve their experience while maintaining clear and effective communication about our operations.”
