Devon County Council has launched a new action plan called ‘Brighter Futures’ to help young people aged 16 to 25 get into education, work or training over the next three years.

The plan, approved by the council’s Cabinet in the summer, focuses on care-experienced young people, those with special educational needs and disabilities, and others struggling to find their way into training or work.

The council said the plan will provide extra mentoring, internships, and more one-to-one support during transitions, as well as improve access to transport and digital resources in rural areas.

A key part of the plan is a new Job Quality Charter, which asks local employers to offer secure jobs with opportunities to progress.

Local Youth Offers will also be set up, tailored to each community’s needs so support is available close to home.

Councillors are set to consider the plan at a Cabinet meeting on 8th October.

Councillor Julian Brazil, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education, said: “We want every young person in Devon to feel supported, valued and hopeful about their future.

“This plan is about practical help, and providing real opportunities that make a difference.”

Keri Denton, Director of Performance and Partnerships at Devon County Council, said: “Brighter Futures is about working together – families, schools, employers, and communities – to give young people the tools they need to succeed.”
