Josh McNicholas from Evalu-8 EHS shared five common health and safety breaches seen in UK workplaces that could cost you your job if ignored.

McNicholas said failing to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety boots, helmets, goggles or gloves, is not acceptable, even in extreme weather like a heatwave.

He said PPE is not optional and refusing or forgetting to use it can be treated as gross misconduct, especially if it puts you or others at risk.

Not reporting hazards or incidents was another key breach he mentioned.

McNicholas explained that employees are expected to report unsafe conditions or accidents at work.

If someone is found to have known about a risk but did nothing, it could lead to disciplinary action.

Using equipment without the right training or permission was also a serious issue, McNicholas raised.

He noted that most workplaces have strict rules about training and certification.

Ignoring these can be seen as reckless and could result in dismissal.

McNicholas added that tampering with safety systems, such as fire extinguishers, machine guards or emergency alarms, is both illegal and dangerous.

Turning up to work under the influence of drugs or alcohol was another major risk, especially in safety-critical jobs.

McNicholas said many workplaces have strict policies in place and breaches can lead to instant dismissal, regardless of whether an incident has happened.

He added that while lunchtime drinks might seem tempting, they should be avoided until after work.

McNicholas said: “Health and safety breaches aren’t just about fines or reputational damage.

“Gross negligence or repeated disregard for safety protocols can, and absolutely will, cost you your job.

“Your employer has a duty to protect their workforce, and if your actions compromise that, you can land yourself in real trouble!

“Making sure all employees are familiar with health and safety rules, and have access to reporting tools, is essential.”

92% of workers say job titles are used to fake career growth, research reveals

A new survey found that employers are increasingly using inflated job titles to give the illusion of advancement – without raises, promotions, or added benefits – leaving many workers feeling misled and undervalued. According to the Title Inflation Report from MyPerfectResume®, which surveyed 1,000 workers, 92% believed companies use job titles to fake career growth. The findings painted a picture of widespread ‘title inflation’, where lofty labels mask stagnant pay and stalled progression. More than one-third of respondents said they’ve received a senior-sounding title without a pay increase, while 38% said their title made their role appear more advanced than
