Barnsley Council has received a ‘Breastfeeding Friendly Employer’ certificate in recognition of its work to support staff returning from maternity leave.

The certificate is part of the Breastfeeding Friendly Employer Scheme, led by the children’s Public Health team, which encourages businesses to help staff continue breastfeeding after returning to work.

The council is the first employer to achieve the Public Health certificate after bringing in several initiatives.

These include updating the maternity policy to encourage managers to engage with staff as they come back to work, opening a private breastfeeding room with a fridge for expressed milk, and offering a flexible approach to working hours.

Councillor Wendy Cain, cabinet spokesperson for public health and communities, said: “After our survey, we listened to our communities.

“The whole process of creating this initiative took time and input from a range of services.

“We’re proud to receive the recognition for our support for our employees.

“If your organisation would like to join the scheme, this excellent initiative is now open to all business across Barnsley!”

Councillor Robert Frost (pictured, centre), cabinet spokesperson for core services, said: “As an employer, we recognise the value of creating an inclusive and supportive workplace for all employees.

“By fostering a breastfeeding-friendly environment, we not only promote the well-being of our staff but also contribute to the public health of future generations, as breastfeeding provides the best possible start in life.

“These initiatives reflect our commitment to investing in the health and happiness of our workforce, which ultimately strengthens our organisation.”
