Northern Ireland employee jobs rise by 1.3% to over 816,000 in 2023 – NISRA

Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA) released its Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES), which found that employee jobs in Northern Ireland reached 816,562 as of September 2023, up 1.3% from September 2022. 

Growth came mainly from the private sector, which added 9,240 jobs, a rise of 1.6%, while the public sector increased by 1,474 jobs, or 0.7%. 

Construction jobs fell by 903, a drop of 2.4%. 

The service industry remained the largest, making up 81.4% of employee jobs with 664,835 roles, while manufacturing accounted for 10.9% with 89,370 jobs.

Additionally, BRES found that job numbers rose in most district council areas. Belfast saw the biggest increase, adding 6,615 jobs. 

Mid and East Antrim recorded the largest percentage growth at 3.8% or 1,656 jobs. 

Only Antrim and Newtownabbey, and Derry City and Strabane reported a fall in employee jobs, down by 1,172 and 701 respectively.
