A Skills for Care report released on 10th October shows the need for fair pay agreements in the care sector, according to union GMB.

There were more than 130,000 vacancies in the care sector on any given day last year, while 24.2% of people working in care left their jobs in 2023-24.

The Employment Rights Bill, published yesterday, included a fair pay agreement for care workers, meaning more than one million care workers – and their unions – can now come together to negotiate for better pay, terms and conditions.

Natalie Grayson, national officer at GMB, said: “Despite the fact every single one of us will likely be touched by the care sector in our lives, care workers have been underpaid and undervalued for years.

“It’s no wonder people are leaving the sector in droves.

“A Fair Pay Agreement in social care will drive up wages, implement sick pay and paid travel time and give care workers a national voice.

“If we want a care sector fit for purpose, it is absolutely vital.”
