On International Workers’ Day, retail trade union Usdaw has reiterated its call for a New Deal for Workers, aiming to address the challenges of low pay and insecure employment in the retail sector. Paddy Lillis, general secretary of Usdaw, emphasised the need for societal change in how workers are viewed and treated.

Lillis said: “On International Workers’ Day we celebrate workers’ contribution to society, reflect on the achievements of the labour and trade union movement and look to future challenges and campaigns.” He highlighted the plight of millions of low-paid workers who, despite providing essential services, often lack adequate recognition, respect, or remuneration.

Usdaw’s proposed New Deal for Workers includes a significant minimum wage increase, the end of insecure employment, and heightened respect for shopworkers, ensuring that retail jobs are fairly compensated. “Going to work should mean a decent standard of living for all workers,” Lillis added.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the current government’s efforts, Lillis noted that the Labour Party has committed to implementing a new deal for workers within 100 days of coming to power. Usdaw supports this initiative, advocating for a general election as the union believes Labour’s policies will effectively address these longstanding issues.
