Aviva disclosed that it paid £413,783,489 in Group Protection claims in 2023, supporting 8,077 employees and their dependents. This payout is part of a broader effort that has seen the company distribute over £1.15 billion in the last three years across various claims, with cancer being the predominant cause.
In detail, Aviva paid over £116 million in Group Income Protection benefits to 5,361 claimants, with the average payout per claimant amounting to £21,820. Notably, cancer accounted for nearly a quarter of the new claims, followed by mental health conditions and orthopedic issues. Rehabilitation support saw an 11% increase from the previous year, with 83% of those supported either remaining in or returning to work successfully.
In Group Critical Illness, Aviva paid out over £41 million with 572 claims, with 70% of these claims
related to cancer. The average payout was £71,746. Aviva also supported children through critical illnesses, paying out £375,928 for 30 children under their ‘Project Teddy’, which includes sending toys and gifts to affected families.
For Group Life Insurance, Aviva settled claims totalling more than £255.7 million for 2,144 claims last year, with an average payout of £117,663. Cancer was again the most common reason for claims, constituting 38% of the total.
Jason Ellis, group protection sales director at Aviva, commented on the impact of these programs: “The insight clearly demonstrates how we’re supporting employees and their loved ones through difficult times, not only financially, but also through specialist wellbeing services and rehabilitation expertise.”
