The Planning Inspectorate has announced a recruitment drive for experienced planning and built environment professionals to become local plan inspectors, with applications set to open in early 2026.

Local authorities across England are currently preparing local plans that will guide housing delivery, town centre development and long-term sustainable growth.

As demand for local plan examinations increases, the Planning Inspectorate has said it needs additional inspectors to ensure plans are examined rigorously and independently.

Local plan inspectors play a central role in testing evidence, assessing soundness and making decisions that have lasting impacts on communities nationwide.

The role will offer flexible home-based working, comprehensive training and mentoring, and a competitive salary and benefits package.

The Planning Inspectorate said it is particularly keen to hear from senior professionals with experience in local plan preparation or examination, planning policy and strategy, local authority planning, consultancy, or related fields such as architecture, surveying and law.
