Staff at the Nissan Sunderland plant have spent a total of 3,000 hours volunteering for good causes over the last year.

Causes include Durham Food Bank, which the team supported in the run-up to last Christmas, using their distribution and supply chain management expertise.

Staff from the Sunderland plant also built play areas, performed gardening work, and built an otter den.

Michael Jude, HR director at Nissan Sunderland, said: “We’re hugely proud of the wide range of technical skills among our team of 6,000, and that feeling of pride is amplified massively when you see those skills supporting such good causes.

“Of course, not every volunteering opportunity is linked to engineering and manufacturing brilliant cars, but our team is also renowned for its exceptional work ethic and ingenuity, whatever the task.

“Our team benefit too, as our people get to explore new experiences and connect with the wider community.

“It’s a great initiative and one we want to grow.”

More than 100 charities, schools, and community centres have been supported over the last year, with every employee at the plant able to take two days a year to volunteer.

Staff can nominate charities, with previous nominations including 4LOUIS, a child bereavement charity.

Victoria Usher, from 4LOUIS, said: “Nissan has been supporting 4LOUIS since we were nominated by an employee.

“Their support is vital in helping us maintaining the service we offer for grieving parents, which includes memory boxes to provide families with a lasting memory of their loved one.”

In the future, Nissan will support RedSTART, a children’s financial education charity; financial experts from Nissan will educate school-aged children on basic money management skills.

Nissan aims to become a more sustainable company, with the brand’s Ambition 2030 strategy aiming to create a more inclusive, safer, and cleaner future.
