Stress really comes from not using our minds the right way. It might sound crazy, but most of us have never actually been taught how to think.
The way we process our thoughts directly influences our emotions, and if we’re not aware of that, stress can take over.
A lot of stress comes from constantly reacting to what’s happening outside of us. We worry about things that haven’t even happened yet, and in doing so, we actually invite those unwanted outcomes into our lives.
For instance, if you’re stressed about an upcoming client call having a negative outcome, you’re paying more attention to the negative possibilities rather than the positive ones.
Negativity attracts negativity, making this outcome all the more probable.
The key is to shift our focus inward and take control of our thoughts rather than letting them control us.
How can we best manage workplace stress?
One of the best ways to manage stress is to train your mind to stay present. The past is done, and the future hasn’t happened yet, so why let them dictate how you feel right now?
The more you focus on what you can control in the present moment, the less stress will have a hold on you.
Entrepreneurs, especially, need to develop mental resilience. Challenges will come, but stress isn’t about what happens to you, but rather how you respond to it. When you learn to master your thinking, stress no longer runs the show.
Additionally, reframe stress as a challenge, not a threat. Stress is often seen as a negative, but what if we looked at it differently?
Instead of seeing challenges as problems, view them as opportunities to grow. Good things don’t come easy, and the more obstacles you encounter, the better equipped you are to face them in the future.
Finally, take the time to ask yourself, ‘Am I focusing on what truly matters?’. This small-but-powerful thought allows you to consider if what you’re stressing about is worth your time and energy.
Stressing about work, particularly if you work for a corporation, is pointless.
“You’re already dedicating so much of your time and mental capacity to them, and ultimately, you’re working to their dream, not yours.
Prioritise yourself. Your goals, your aspirations, and your well-being. When you put yourself first and create a mindset of control and clarity, stress no longer dictates your success.
