Aberdeen International Airport has launched an artificial intelligence (AI) digital assistant called ‘Hello Aberdeen’ to help passengers as they move through the terminal.

The tool was developed with Hello Lamp Post and is accessed by scanning QR codes around the airport.

It gives instant travel information on passengers’ phones and can support people with accessibility needs and those travelling from overseas.

By answering common queries automatically, the digital assistant is intended to cut down the number of routine questions staff receive, letting teams deal with urgent and complex tasks.

A previous trial at Glasgow Airport, where the digital assistant was tested in partnership with Connected Places Catapult, focused on helping passengers with special assistance needs.

The trial found a 50% drop in queries to customer service staff, over 12,300 more passengers supported each year, and an 86% satisfaction rate with the service.

Mark Beveridge, managing director at Aberdeen International Airport, said: “We are delighted that we have been able to launch this cutting-edge technology that will help passengers with real-time information available.

“This AI-powered assistant we hope will further enhance the customer experience, ensuring a smoother and more personalised journey for all that pass through Aberdeen International Airport.”

Tiernan Mines, co-founder and chief executive officer at Hello Lamp Post, said: “The launch of ‘Hello Aberdeen’ marks another key milestone in our partnership with the AGS Group, improving the experience for both passengers and staff.

“By freeing up staff to focus on what matters most, we’re ensuring passengers get the best support where it counts.”
