John Lewis is taking a novel approach to recruitment by posting its job interview questions online, aiming to attract the best talent and streamline the application process for potential candidates.

This initiative, as reported by the Financial Times, involves making these questions accessible for each role through a dedicated website.

Lorna Bullett, the talent acquisition lead at John Lewis, expressed the company’s strategy behind this move: “We want the right people, from a variety of backgrounds, with the best talent to join our organisation. It makes absolute business sense to find ways of helping candidates to really demonstrate what they can do.”

The website will allow candidates to review the interview questions applicable to various roles, helping them prepare thoroughly for the interview process. This includes not only the specific role-related and technical questions but also follow-up or probing questions that delve deeper into the candidates’ authenticity and experience.

Bullett emphasises the rigorous nature of the interview process, stating: “The process will be no less rigorous. Interviewers can very quickly get a sense of whether their answers are authentic and based on real experience.”

This initiative by John Lewis is particularly timely, given the current talent shortages affecting eight out of ten companies in the UK, as highlighted by employment agency Manpower.
