Liberal Democrats call GDP growth “pitiful” and demand action on jobs tax and trade

Responding to the announcement that GDP grew by just 0.1% in November, Liberal Democrat treasury spokesperson Daisy Cooper MP has accused the government of failing to deliver meaningful economic recovery. She said: “The Chancellor has put the handbrake on the economy with her misguided jobs tax, and the consequence is this pitiful rate of growth.”

Cooper warned that continued stagnation would have a direct impact on the public, saying: “Every month this persists means less money in struggling families’ pockets and public services without the funding they need.”

She also criticised the Labour government’s economic direction, arguing that after years of Conservative mismanagement, the country needed bold reforms. “The public was crying out for change, but this new government is falling well short of fixing this mess,” she added.

Cooper called on Chancellor Rachel Reeves to scrap what she termed a “foolish jobs tax” and instead focus on strategies to reinvigorate the economy. These include mending the UK’s trade relationship with Europe and overhauling the business rates system, which she described as “broken.”
