A recent study conducted by South Africa-based tech experts PCInternational has highlighted the highest-paying tech jobs in the UK. By analysing data from the UK’s National Careers Service and job listings on Indeed, the study ranked 30 tech roles based on average annual salaries.
At the top of the list is the role of a solutions architect, with an average salary of £72,600. According to Indeed, London offers the highest average wage for this role at £80,445, followed by Leeds at £75,898. Solutions architects design complex IT systems, making them highly valued in the sector.
In second place is the back-end developer role, earning £56,600 on average. Back-end developers, responsible for server-side web development, are among the most sought-after professionals in tech. London remains the top-paying city for this role (£72,652), followed by Cambridge (£60,620) and Southampton (£58,856).
Third on the list is the data engineer role, with an average salary of £55,100. Outside London, Cambridge leads in pay for this role (£62,719), with Newcastle (£56,160) and Manchester (£53,376) following.
Other high-ranking roles include full stack developers (£53,100), IT security specialists (£52,800), and data scientists (£51,700). The study notes that while London remains the highest-paying location for most tech jobs, cities like Cambridge, Reading, and Manchester also offer competitive salaries.
Commenting on the findings, Jonathan Perumal, chief technical officer of PCInternational, said, “The tech industry is booming currently and has been for the past few years. The average UK salary is around £37,430 for full-time workers, but many of these tech jobs allow employees to easily exceed this amount.”
Perumal also highlighted the growing number of women in tech roles. “By early 2024, the percentage of women in the tech sector rose to 26%, up from 19% in 2019. Government initiatives and programmes like the Home Office’s Digital Data & Technology Women in Tech have played a key role in this progress.”
He concluded by noting the high demand for skilled professionals in the sector, stating, “The high salaries reflect both the demand for skilled professionals and the rapid pace of technological innovation driving the economy. For those considering a career in tech, now is an excellent time to gain the necessary skills and enter the sector.”
