Members of the RMT union employed by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) have voted decisively to accept a new pay deal from the Ministry of Defence, bringing an end to a protracted dispute that included multiple rounds of industrial action.
The agreement provides significant uplifts in salaries and earnings, including backpay, to address years of suppressed pay. Workers will also retain key benefits such as travel vouchers and the bonus scheme for the duration of the deal. Additionally, shorter assignments and improved work-life balance form part of the agreement.
RMT general secretary Mick Lynch praised the workers’ resilience, stating: “This is a fantastic result for our RFA members, who’ve stood strong, united and taken several bouts of strike action during this dispute. They’ve secured real terms pay increases, important improvements to their working lives, and I thank them for their efforts.”
Lynch emphasized the broader impact of the agreement, noting: “This agreement lays the groundwork for securing their future and vital role assisting the Royal Navy. RMT will keep fighting to ensure the contributions of RFA workers are properly recognised going forward.”
Looking ahead, the RMT will enter discussions with the RFA and Ministry of Defence to address the future structure of the RFA, along with further enhancements to conditions of service and salaries. Lynch expressed confidence in making further progress, highlighting the union’s commitment to securing lasting improvements for its members.
