ScottishPower has launched a recruitment initiative aimed at workers facing redundancy from the construction giant ISG and the Grangemouth fuel refinery, offering them a chance to transition into the clean energy sector. ISG, which went into administration in September, announced 2,200 immediate redundancies, with further impact expected across its supply chain. Additionally, the Petroineos-operated Grangemouth refinery is set to shut down by June 2025, affecting about 400 jobs.
In response to the growing demand for skilled labour in the energy sector, ScottishPower has pledged to double its UK investment to £24bn, with £11bn dedicated to projects in Scotland. This substantial investment aims to modernise electricity networks by upgrading existing power lines and constructing new ones, as electricity demand is projected to double in the coming years.
Sarah McNulty, ScottishPower’s people and organisation director, highlighted the significant employment opportunities generated by this investment. She stated: “The massive investment in electricity networks is not just good for modernising critical Scottish infrastructure but for jobs too. This is one of our largest ever recruitment programmes and one of the largest in Scotland. Workers at both Petroineos and ISG will have the sought after skills we are looking for and we have the jobs to match.”
McNulty further emphasised ScottishPower’s openness to helping workers from oil and gas industries transition into the power networks sector. “We’re also more than happy to look at how we help people make the move into power networks from oil and gas if they’re looking for a career switch so anyone interested should get in touch,” she added.
The company is offering a range of skilled, secure, and well-paid roles across central southern Scotland, including positions in its renewables business. Recognising the uncertainty faced by those impacted by redundancies, McNulty affirmed: “We recognise it’s a concerning time for people whose livelihoods are affected and that’s why we’ve reached out to the HR teams at both companies to flag our opportunities and help get them into new roles as quickly as possible.”
