Job market softens as payrolls and vacancies fall – ONS
Estimates based on HMRC data revealed the number of payrolled employees fell by 74,000 (0.2%) between February 2025 and February 2026.

Estimates based on HMRC data revealed the number of payrolled employees fell by 74,000 (0.2%) between February 2025 and February 2026.

The 25-34 age group made up 76% of the drop in payrolled jobs over the past year.

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons, said: "This initiative will continue to support local businesses, create jobs, and make a lasting positive impact on neighbourhoods across the city."

The campaign is targeting sectors with high vacancy rates, including manufacturing, logistics, retail, hospitality, health and social care, and construction.

The unemployment rate for people aged 16 and over was 4.7%, also up on the quarter and higher than last year.

KPMG and REC data showed that permanent and temporary staff availability increased sharply, mostly due to redundancies and fewer job opportunities.

There were 137,542 jobs posted in Q1 and 150,578 in Q2.

ONS labour market data for December to February shows real wage growth and a rising employment rate, but vacancies have dropped for the 33rd consecutive quarter, falling below pre-pandemic levels for the first time.

In response to these figures, Paul Nowak, general secretary of the TUC, said: "Ministers are taking important steps to improve support for people out of work. Jobcentres must become places people enter with hope, not fear."

Adzuna's UK Job Market Report indicates a slight decrease in job vacancies in February, signaling potential market stabilisation, despite an overall annual downturn. Salary transparency improves, with sector-specific growth and challenges highlighting a competitive employment landscape.
