Most unpaid carers say Carer’s Allowance is not enough to cover lost income – Just Group
Among carers supporting an elderly relative, only 21% said Carer’s Allowance is enough to replace income lost from giving up work.

Among carers supporting an elderly relative, only 21% said Carer’s Allowance is enough to replace income lost from giving up work.

The findings from Just Group highlight the growing time and financial pressures faced by those balancing caring responsibilities with work and personal commitments.

The initiative will establish seven Kinship Zones across England, providing financial allowances to eligible relatives who care for children when their parents are unable to do so.

The study from Just Group showed that 37% of carers aged 45 to 75 have stepped back from paid work to meet caring responsibilities.

65% of unpaid carers felt overwhelmed because they could not take a break, while 66% needed more support with their own health and wellbeing.

Christine Burton, carer support worker at Making Space, said: “We’re so grateful for this support, which helps us protect carers at their most vulnerable.”

With the new funding, Carers UK plans to build on links with professionals in the sport, leisure, health and care sectors.

Carers UK urged more employers to adopt carer-friendly measures in the workplace to support employees who combine work and unpaid care.
