Ministers said the increase will help strengthen community care provision and support staff working in nursing homes.

The programme is open to all nursing associates in the UK who have an Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)-approved qualification.

Under the new plan, NHS providers will begin hiring staff before vacancies formally arise, with recruitment based on projected need rather than current headcount.

The programme was set up to help people who might not have been able to train as nurses before due to work or family commitments.

Magda Nyczak-Kal said: “The NHS is a place where you can learn new skills and play an instrumental role in providing quality healthcare to patients."

Aston University has opened a £1.5m simulation healthcare facility, offering students realistic training with advanced equipment, including the UK’s first black-skinned bariatric manikin and immersive teaching spaces.
