Government launches review of Carer’s Allowance to explore benefit reforms
The review will examine changes including modernising the earnings limit and improving support for carers with fluctuating incomes.

The review will examine changes including modernising the earnings limit and improving support for carers with fluctuating incomes.

Charity Carers UK said it is deeply concerned to see the Government pressing ahead with plans which will see future claimants lose their entitlement to carers’ benefits.

Between May 2024 and February 2025, the number of outstanding Carer’s Allowance overpayment debts increased by over 9,000, with 143,922 people now affected.

Research released earlier last week by Carers UK found that four in 10 carers with difficulties with the earnings limit had given up work.

The review will focus on how and why overpayments were accrued, operational changes to minimise future overpayment risk and how the DWP can best support those with overpayments.
