GPs to ballot on alternative model for general practice in England
The move follows the passing of a resolution at the UK Local Medical Committees Conference earlier this month calling for consideration of a subscription-based service model.

The move follows the passing of a resolution at the UK Local Medical Committees Conference earlier this month calling for consideration of a subscription-based service model.

The strike action, announced by the BMA, will run from 7am on 15th June until 6.59am on 19th June.

The ballot includes consultants, specialist, associate specialist and specialty (SAS) doctors, and resident doctors working in secondary care across Northern Ireland.

81% of doctors said the way advanced practitioners currently work in the NHS is a risk to patient safety.

The staff, represented by GMB Union, walked out after the BMA did not return to negotiations following previous industrial action.

Starmer stated in The Times that last week’s decision by the union to reject the Government’s offer and announce the strike was “reckless”.

Almost 17,000 GPs and GP registrars took part in the vote, with 98.9% opposing the plans and calling for a return to negotiations.

BMA employees will strike for 48 hours after an overwhelming ballot result backing industrial action over pay.

Medical education standards in Scotland are being put at “serious risk” due to rising class sizes, according to BMA Scotland.

The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act received Royal Assent on Thursday, introducing measures intended to prioritise UK medical graduates for NHS training places.

More than 60% of respondents disagreed or strongly disagreed that the organisation listens to staff views.

Responding to the UK Government’s Medical Training (Prioritisation) Bill, Dr Jack Fletcher, chair of the UK Resident Doctors Committee, said the move marked progress but did not address the lack of available posts across the NHS.
