People Like Us has launched its Reject the Rejections campaign to improve transparency around automated hiring systems.

The organisation called on employers to state in job adverts when automation or artificial intelligence (AI) has been used to screen candidates and to check those systems for bias.

The campaign website provides a letter template that candidates can send to employers to ask whether automated processing was involved and request a human review.

It also includes a spoken-word film based on lines from genuine rejection emails.

Research by People Like Us and Censuswide found 80% had been rejected for a role in the past two years.

Among those, 74% suspected at least one rejection had been made automatically without a human reading their application.

Only 15% had been told that an automated system was used during the recruitment process.

Among employers that monitored automated screening, 82% found outcomes differed by ethnicity.

Ethnically diverse candidates applied for a third more roles than white candidates and were more likely to receive a rejection within an hour, at 41% compared with 32%.
