Neil Carberry (pictured) has started as chief executive of the CIPD, succeeding Peter Cheese after 14 years in the role.

Carberry took up the position today, Monday 28th September, following a period in which Caroline Stockmann served as interim chief executive during the handover.

In his first message in the role, Carberry said people professionals were being asked to help organisations navigate challenges including skills shortages, weak productivity, technological change, new regulation and changing workforce expectations.

Carberry said: “Look at almost any issue keeping a policymaker, a politician, or a chief executive awake and, somewhere within it, there is a people question.

“There’s nothing revolutionary about saying that people and skills drive performance. The challenge is that so many still haven’t acted as if they do, and that has consequences.”

He said the organisation would continue to provide members with evidence, standards, insight and practical support, while representing the profession in boardrooms and policymaking.

Carberry added: “The CIPD should be the place people turn to for the best thinking, the strongest evidence and the most credible voice on work and people.

“I don’t arrive with all the answers, and nor should I.

“My first job is to listen, learn and work with our members.

“Because if we want stronger organisations and a stronger economy, we need to be much more serious about the people and skills that deliver growth.”
