Aberdeen was ranked the best UK city for fully remote workers seeking a coworking base, research from Co-Space found.

The city scored 77.8 out of 100, followed by Warrington with 70.7 and Liverpool with 68.9.

Manchester placed fourth with 68.8, while Nottingham completed the top five with 67.7.

London ranked 15th out of the 16 markets with 32.5.

Oxford placed last with 16.4.

William Stokes, chief executive and co-founder of Co-Space, said: “Remote working has changed what people should be looking for in a place to work.

“If you’re no longer commuting into an office every day, there’s much less reason to automatically gravitate towards the biggest city or the most expensive business district.

“The interesting thing about this ranking is that it challenges the idea that bigger cities necessarily offer more to remote workers.”

Stokes added: “Cities such as Aberdeen, Warrington and Liverpool are showing that value, convenience and quality of life can be just as important as being close to a major employment centre.

“For someone working remotely five days a week, a coworking space isn’t simply somewhere to put a laptop.

“It can provide structure to the working day, opportunities to meet people and a clear separation between work and home.”

He said: “That means the best space is ultimately the one that fits how you work, not necessarily the one in the most prestigious location.”

Stokes said remote workers should consider access to quiet areas, meeting rooms, phone booths and shared spaces when choosing a coworking site.

He also advised workers to check what membership fees covered and use a day pass or trial before committing.

Stokes said: “It’s a shared workspace, so the basics really matter.

“Be conscious of how loudly you’re taking calls, use phone booths for longer conversations where possible, keep communal areas available for everyone and respect that other people may be trying to concentrate.”
