Orkney Islands Council steps up gender equality through Equally Safe at Work programme

Orkney Islands Council has stepped up its work on gender equality by taking part in the Equally Safe at Work accreditation programme. 

The programme offers a framework to help improve workplace culture and deliver long-term changes. 

The council reviewed its policies and guidance to support staff progression and address gender-based violence and domestic abuse. 

Orkney Islands Council recognised that tackling these issues means looking at the inequalities women face at work and in the labour market.

The council said it aims to make sure the workplace is fair, safe and inclusive for all staff.

The council will keep reviewing and improving its work across the organisation.

Lorna Richarson, Director for Infrastructure and Organisational Development at Orkney Islands Council, said: “Participation in the Equally Safe at Work programme is an important step in strengthening our commitment to equality across Orkney Islands Council. 

“Creating a fair and inclusive workplace requires more than policies, it requires cultural change, strong leadership and meaningful action.
