London Fire Brigade becomes 300th Living Hours Employer

London Fire Brigade has become the 300th employer to accredit as a Living Hours Employer with the Living Wage Foundation. 

The Living Hours scheme aims to tackle low paid and insecure jobs, with 3.4 million people affected by short shifts and irregular work in the UK. 

The scheme commits employers to at least four weeks’ notice for every shift, guaranteed payment if shifts are cancelled within this period, a minimum of 16 working hours each week unless the worker requests fewer, and contracts reflecting actual hours worked. 

Graham Griffiths, interim director of the Living Wage Foundation, said: “We’re delighted to welcome the London Fire Brigade to the 300-strong movement of responsible employers providing their workers with fair, secure working patterns through Living Hours. 

“The commitment of these leading employers means their workers can plan and budget for their lives and their futures. 

“It’s good for people and good for business, and it’s great to see more and more employers becoming part of this movement to drive up standards of good work for everyone.”

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, said: “I’m pleased the London Fire Brigade have become a Living Hours Employer, which ensures employees have guaranteed working hours, providing them with the stability and job security they need to support themselves and thrive in our city. 

“There are now more than 4,300 Living Wage Employers in the capital and this continues to grow.
