TUC urges employers to support flexible working after England World Cup game

The TUC has called on employers to show “common sense and understanding” by offering flexible working arrangements to football fans following England’s 3-2 World Cup victory over Mexico in the early hours of Monday morning.

The union body said businesses should, where possible, accommodate requests such as later start times, home working or adjusted hours to help employees who stayed up to watch the 1am kick-off.

It added that hospitality workers covering extended opening hours during the match should be fairly paid for any overtime worked.

Paul Nowak, general secretary of the TUC, said: “World Cup fever has gripped the UK, with millions of workers across the country cheering on the Three Lions.

“The timing of England’s match against Mexico is not ideal for fans.

“That’s why we are appealing to employers to show some common sense and understanding by allowing their staff to work flexibly where possible.

“That could mean letting them start later on Monday or swap their hours.”

The TUC said flexible working arrangements should be agreed where practical and balanced against operational requirements, arguing that a pragmatic approach can support morale, motivation and productivity.
