GMB urges support for UK ceramics ahead of parliamentary debate

GMB has called for greater support for the UK ceramics industry ahead of a parliamentary debate on the sector, including changes to procurement rules and additional help with energy costs.

The debate follows a petition backing the ceramics industry that attracted more than 100,000 signatures, prompting MPs to discuss the challenges facing manufacturers.

The union said it wants ceramics to be included in the Government’s energy-intensive industries support scheme, known as the Supercharger, to help businesses manage rising energy costs.

GMB also called for public sector organisations, including government departments, embassies and other institutions, to prioritise buying British-made ceramic products.

Chris Hoofe, GMB organiser, said: “This debate is a historic opportunity to set out just how vital UK ceramics are.

“We have seen this year that the Government get it and are stepping up their support for the sector.

“Now is the time to be bold on British industry; that is why we are calling for ceramics to be included in the Government’s energy intensive relief framework, known as the Supercharger.

“But now is also the time to buy British and ensure that Government bodies, embassies and institutions are using British made cups, plates and bathroom products.”
