Equity calls for higher pay and better work-life balance for opera singers
Equity’s claim covers minimum weekly pay, terms and conditions for principals, covers and freelance singers working with UK Theatre/SOLT member opera companies.

Opera singers have called for better pay, more predictable schedules and clearer contracts as negotiations began this week between Equity and UK Theatre/SOLT.
Equity’s claim covers minimum weekly pay, terms and conditions for principals, covers and freelance singers working with UK Theatre/SOLT member opera companies.
The union said the claim focused on raising pay for the lowest paid, reflecting changes in performance patterns, and making work more family friendly.
It also asked for more notice of scheduling and clearer conditions for artists and engagers.
Lottie Stables, singers and dancers official at Equity, said: “The demands from Equity’s membership are clear – for too long they have seen their pay stagnate, whilst being expected to show ever more flexibility with their working patterns.
“This needs to stop. If managers are serious about artists’ wellbeing and dignity, they must address the demands of this claim and ensure fair weekly pay, improved scheduling and transparent terms for all singers.”
A spokesperson from the Society of London Theatre said: “We are committed to constructive and collaborative negotiations through the jointly established process and look forward to discussions with Equity with the aim of reaching a fair and sustainable minimum terms agreement.”
